World Water Day 2021

The importance of small actions to save the planet.

Can we make the difference?

WATER AND LIFE

Being one of the four elements of matter, water is essential to life. However, people underestimate its importance. As the backbone of all life and true necessity, water should never be reduced to its mere economic value, as it is necessary for the survival, maintenance and functioning of almost any activity.

The World Water Day is celebrated every year on the 22nd of March to promote small acts in our daily life that can make the difference. Even though we frequently hear about this issue, we are still not completely familiar with the challenge we are going to face in the next fifty years.

The current status of water scarcity highlights the need for improved water resources management. Acknowledging the worth of water and incorporating it into decision-making, is fundamental to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

SMALL ACTIONS TO SAVE THE PLANET

Speaking of everyday actions, the use of water bottles will contribute to reduce water waste. In fact, the bottles made of steel have many advantages, such as safety, low environmental impact and reduction of plastic waste as well.

For this reason, Bocconi University strongly supports the use of water bottles. As a matter of fact, our Campus supports many eco-friendly initiatives. The University offers filtered drinking water at dispensers placed around campus for free. Therefore, if you haven’t done it yet, start to make the difference!

24 BOTTLES’ INITIATIVE

In the past few years, the water bottles business has grown rapidly. Among the many competitors, we have to refer to 24Bottles as synonym of an Italian design project.

Giovanni Randazzo and Matteo Melotti founded the brand in 2013 with the aim of creating useful and functional objects that make the world a more pleasant and less polluted place. 24Bottles shows how “good aesthetics can be a lever to convince people adopting healthy behaviours and lifestyles”. As a consequence, sustainability and environmental issues represent the brand’s main interest. The brand offers collections of bottles, coordinated accessories and smart solutions to support healthy lifestyles.

In order to celebrate the World Water Day, 24Bottles has projected a new gift for its customers: stainless straws. The company has provided a straw kit for every online order placed until the 22nd of March 2021. The aim is to raise awareness among consumers. In fact, this initiative represents another strategy to involve people in the water prevention process. Everyone should know the importance of day-to-day gestures, in order to understand how they could lead the change.

A Just Transition: How to Ensure Fossil Fuel Workers Aren’t Abandoned

Energy transitions are inevitable, but they impose concentrated costs on specific workers and communities while distributing diffuse benefits widely. It is both ethically and practically sound to use policy to cushion this transition and to do so in ways that amplify worker voice (via unions and social dialogue), reskill workers in their home regions, and ensure that communities aren’t left economically devastated. The EU has begun to operationalise this via the Just Transition Mechanism, but implementation is patchy and often misses structural problems (inequality, lack of alternative industries). For developing nations, the challenge is an order of magnitude harder due to fiscal constraints and governance limitations, which creates a fairness problem: the Global South (which contributed least to climate change) may bear the highest just-transition costs. International solidarity and support are therefore both morally necessary and pragmatically required for a globally equitable transition.
